Dr. Erin Boespflug established ClinCite, LLC after spending over two decades in clinical research and health policy. She has served the scientific community in roles ranging from Research Assistant to NIH-funded Assistant Professor and has built a robust research toolbox along the way.
Her early career work was in Patient Reported Outcomes, helping to communicate the experience of pain and fatigue. This work contributed to the establishment of tools that are now widely used in the clinic and in clinical trials.1,2
As a doctoral student in cellular and molecular neuroscience with a passion for clinical research, her focus was in developing a deep understanding of how tools such as cognitive testing and brain imaging are used to assess the structure and function of the central nervous system.3,4,5 After obtaining her Ph.D. in Neuroscience, she continued this work to understand how lifestyle interventions can impact progressive neurodegeneration in Alzheimer disease and related dementias.6,7,8,9,10
A primary focus of her late post-doctoral and faculty work was characterizing how specialized cells in the brain and the blood vessels work together to eliminate waste from the brain, and how this process is impacted in disease. During this time, she spear-headed collaborative efforts to develop a novel biomarker for this system, work that resulted in several publications, conference presentations, and a patent.11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19 Throughout her academic career, Dr. Boespflug was Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator on numerous projects supported by federal (NIH) and foundation grants. Much of this work is still being used today to expand research into other clinical cohorts and patient populations.
After a productive and informative career in academia, Dr. Boespflug made the decision to enter the exciting world of medical policy. She was able to put her statistical and medical science knowledge to work as part of a small team of clinical scientists at a major US healthcare payor. This team is responsible for the assessment of clinical trial data and practice guidelines in the generation of evidence-informed health care policies. In this role, she worked daily with regulatory (US Food and Drug Administration) documentation, Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) policy, and medical coding (CPT) systems. While all of this work was interesting, her favorite areas to research and to write policy in were digital health, emerging health technologies, neurostimulation, and genetic testing.
Now, in founding ClinCite, LLC, Dr. Boespflug has found her best fit yet. She gets to share her experience in academic research and the US health care regulatory system with her clients to help them to achieve their scientific goals with integrity and efficiency.
